Finding a Disability Lawyer: A North Carolina Guide

According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), disability is the inability to participate in or perform entry-level, full-time work due to a medical condition over a 12 month period – that is, it has lasted or may last that long. The medical condition could also be terminal (resulting in death).

Unfortunately, not everyone has an easy time working with the SSA. Many people’s disability claims are denied – however, you do not have to be one of those people. If you live in the state of North Carolina, the Clauson Law Firm, PLLC can help you work through the ins and outs of filing. We realize that the system is more complicated than it should be and want to make it simpler for you. So, here are some things we (and you) will need to know before we work together:

Which Office Should You Visit for Your Consultation?

Owner Vaughn Clauson will review every case that comes through our doors, absolutely free. We have offices in Charlotte, Durham, Raleigh, and Winston-Salem – contact us online or by phone and set up an appointment at a location near you to review your case.

What Happens If We Can’t Take Your Case?

The bad news is that Clauson Law Firm cannot take on every case presented to us. The good news is that we will send referrals to other firms if we are able, and we always explain why we cannot help you.

What Is Your Medical Condition?

This is an obvious one – knowing your medical history and what is giving you problems will help us determine how we will handle your case. We work with clients with back and joint pain, headaches and migraines, cancers, mental health disorders, and other chronic diseases. For example, Vaughn discusses how he has been able to help clients receive disability for back problems without them meeting all of the SSA’s requirements due to evaluating the client’s ability to work as well as determining co-occurring medical issues. Getting to know each client and their specific issue personally will help us win you you rightfully deserved disability benefits.

What Will You Have to Pay?

Attorney fees will only incur if the court rules in your favor. Many attorneys charge either $6000 or 25 percent of back benefits, whichever number is lower. At Clauson and other firms, we also charge for obtaining medical records, but again, only if you win.

Is Having a Lawyer Really Benefiting You?

YES! People who file for disability without attorney representation tend to be less successful than people who hire a lawyer to represent them.
