Type one diabetics sometimes develop complications in adulthood such as insulin resistance, vision issues, organ damage, and neuropathy that can support a finding of disability by Social Security.
• Type two diabetes is typically adult-onset diabetes that develops later in life. Type two diabetes, although it can be caused by several factors, is largely caused by obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Type two diabetics treat their condition with both oral medications and injections. They must also monitor their blood sugars. Diabetes can be a disabling condition when blood sugars are not controlled.

Many claimants believe that a diagnosis of diabetes will automatically grant a Social Security disability approval. However, this is false, as many people with diabetes work and live a long, healthy life. The advances in medicine have enabled many people with diabetes to live a relatively “normal” life. There are even professional athletes who have diabetes. Diabetes can be controlled through medication, diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle.
