Applying Medicaid & SSI

Both the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program and the Medicaid program are available to disabled people who meet certain eligibility requirements. The requirements for each of these programs are somewhat complex. What they have in common is that if you qualify for SSI benefits and you are a North Carolina resident, you also qualify for Medicaid coverage in North Carolina.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

The Supplemental Security Income program is a federal program that provides monthly payments to disabled people and others who have low income and few resources. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is in charge of running the SSI program and determining who qualifies for SSI benefits. A person who is applying for benefits must satisfy the general requirements for proving low income and low resources as well as proving that he or she is disabled.

Even after a disabled person qualifies for SSI benefits, there are monthly reporting obligations to satisfy. The person also has an obligation to report to the SSA when certain aspects of his or her living situation change, such as a marriage, divorce, or a change in income. Furthermore, the person is subject to periodic reviews by the SSA regarding his or her disability, resources, and income.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a health insurance program that is available for low-income disabled people, as well as others, who cannot afford health care expenses. Each state in the U.S., including North Carolina, administers its own Medicaid program. In North Carolina, Medicaid coverage provides payments for doctor bills, hospital bills, prescriptions, vision care, dental care, nursing home care, home health care services, and mental health care.
