Payment Dates

Getting approved for Social Security benefits is a feat in and of itself. In a typical year, so many people who apply for either SSDI or SSI benefits are denied — almost two-thirds of applicants, as a matter of fact — that those who have been approved have legitimate reason to celebrate.

Of course, now that you’ve been approved, you’re probably wondering how long it will take to get your first check, and when you can expect to get payments after that. The good news is that the Social Security Administration sticks to a pretty regular schedule when it comes to things like payment dates. As long as you know what to expect and when to expect it, it’s a lot easier to make plans for your financial future.

When Will the First Payment Arrive?

Once you’ve been approved for benefits, you will have to wait just a little while before that first payment arrives. Usually, it takes anywhere from three to five months for that initial payment. Of course, during this time your bills will most likely keep piling up. Because of this, after a couple of months you can also expect to get a little bit of backpay, which will help cover those months you were waiting to get that first check.

What Will the Payment Schedule Be After That?

Once that first payment arrives, then they will show up regularly each month like clockwork. And to make things even easier, the SSA publishes a calendar each year that clearly lays out when you can expect to receive your payments. For the most part, the payments are scheduled according to a couple of different factors:

– For recipients that were first awarded payments (either SSDI or SSI, but not both) before May of 1997, you can expect to receive your payment on the third day of the month. Of course, if the third of the month falls on the weekend or a holiday then that day is changed, usually to the Friday before).

– The third of the month is also the payment date for people who are receiving both SSDI and SSI payments, regardless of when they were first awarded their payments.

– For people born after May 1997 who are receiving SSI benefits, the payments are scheduled for the first day of each month. Just like other payments, though, this date can change if the first falls on a weekend or holiday.

– For people born after May 1997 who are receiving SSDI benefits, there are three possible payment dates. These dates all fall on a Wednesday, but which specific Wednesday of the month depends on your birth date. Specifically, it depends on which day of the month you were born. This is divided up into three groups: People whose birthdays fall on the first ten days of the month should expect their monthly payment on the second Wednesday of each month. People with birthdays anywhere between the 11th and 20th will get their payment the third Wednesday. Finally, recipients who were born between the 21st and 31st of the month will get their Social Security benefits on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

What Happens if a Payment Does Not Arrive?

In some instances, a payment might not arrive in time. This could happen regardless of whether you’re waiting on a digital payment, or the old-fashioned check in the mail. When this happens, the important thing to know is not to panic. While this doesn’t happen frequently, it’s not a rare event. Often, events are outside of the SSA’s control; their might be a hold up at the bank, or the mail might be running a day behind due to heavy volume. The last thing you need to do at this time is call up the SSA.

Most likely, the check will arrive the next day. In the very rare event that it doesn’t, the SSA requests that you wait a total of three mailing days before you contact the SSA. In a large majority of instances, the problem has already fixed itself by then.

If the problem persists after this, and calling the SSA hasn’t fixed the problem, then it might be time to secure legal help. Of course, you don’t need to wait for that to happen — if you have questions or concerns about filing for disability, compiling medical records or any other matter, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
