Medicaid is a state health insurance program that is designed to help low-income and disabled people have access to medical care. If a client is approved medically for SSI and meets all the income criteria for SSI, then they typically receive Medicaid as well. Unfortunately, being approved for SSI can be a long process, which can impose problems when trying to get Medicaid coverage. We have many clients who are going through the SSI application and appeals process, who are in need of medical care while their claim processes. Fortunately, it is possible to be approved for Medicaid benefits before being approved for SSI benefits, as long as you can prove to the Department of Social Services that you are disabled. Just like the SSI application process, Medicaid has an application and review process. Many clients apply for both SSI and Medicaid at the same time, and are denied both. It is important to appeal both decisions separately. We file appeals for SSI denials, and we advise our clients on how to appeal their Medicaid denial. When a Medicaid denial is appealed it is reviewed by a Medicaid hearing officer, who makes a final decision. It is common for a client to be denied both Medicaid and SSI on the initial application, and later get approved for both sets of benefits when the cases goes to hearings.

At the Clauson Law Firm, PLLC, we understand the need for access to medical treatment for people who are disabled and do not have the necessary funds to pay for care. We have represented thousands of individuals who are applying for Social Security Disability benefits, including SSI, as well as Medicaid and Medicare benefits.
