Supplemental Security Income Benefits

Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a federal program that is funded by tax revenues and is designed to help people who have been disabled and have little to no income. Unlike Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB), SSI benefits are not based on prior work history or the amount of Social Security taxes that have been paid over a period of time. In order to be eligible for SSI, a person must either be found disabled, be blind or be over the age of 65.

In Durham, North Carolina, at the Clauson Law Firm, PLLC, our law firm has helped more than a thousand people obtain full or partial benefits. As a board-certified Social Security Disability law specialist, attorney Vaughn Clauson understands the complex regulations and procedures involved with filing for benefits. Together with two knowledgeable legal assistants, we take a team approach to the SSD and SSI benefits process.

Durham Supplemental Security Income Attorney

The reason that SSI benefits were created was to help disabled people, who would otherwise not have the necessary financial support, find economic relief. For that reason, even if a person qualifies as disabled, he or she will not qualify for SSI benefits if that person’s household income exceeds a maximum level.

Other than the financial concerns, what you have to prove at a hearing is the same, regardless of whether your case concerns SSI benefits or DIB. You still have to complete the five-step sequential evaluation process and meet the requirements for disability.
